Served as Science Officer on U.S.S. Al-Batani under Owen Paris. Transferred to command division.
In 2366, undertook first mission as Captain, 6-month venture into Beta Quadrant. Received commendation. On second mission in 2367, named Lieutenant Tuvok her tactical officer. In 2370, assigned to new ship U.S.S. Voyager.
In 2371, Janeway recruited ex-Starfleet, convicted Maquis, Lieutenant Tom Paris to assist in search for Tuvok, lost in Badlands in undercover mission on Maquis ship. Stardate 48307.5, Voyager lost contact with Starfleet there. Recent contact re-established with Voyager has revealed it and Maquis ship were both violently swept to Delta Quadrant by alien entity. Janeway recruited and integrated Maquis with her surviving crew, named several Maquis to senior positions (see Chakotay, Torres) and accepted two Delta Quadrant natives (see Neelix, Kes). Though the Maquis caused serious problems, including espionage, defection by covert Cardassian operative Seska, and sociopathic murder, the majority eventually adjusted to Starfleet protocols.
In 2372, Janeway crossed the warp 10 threshhold with Paris, but experienced side effects: genetic mutation and amphibian offspring. She was returned to human state successfully. Later that year, Janeway and First Officer Chakotay spent several months in voluntary exile on a Delta Quadrant planet, after contracting an alien virus. It remained benign on the planet's surface, but resisted all treatment attempts until a Vidiian physician was contacted by the Voyager crew.
Janeway, the Federation's only presence in Delta Quadrant, made first contact with numerous races, including the organ-stealing Vidiians and the hostile Kazon, with whom she unsuccesfully attempted an alliance (and who took over Voyager briefly in 2372). In late 2371, she discovered the fate of 20th-Century-Earth aviatrix Amelia Earhart, abducted by aliens with several others to Delta Quadrant, kept in stasis until her discovery, and now residing on a planet there. Janeway has also encountered the Q entities in 2372 and 2373.
In 2374, Janeway encountered hostile Species 8472. To combat them, she made historic first Federation alliance with the Borg.
